Administrative automation with professional judgment intact
Legal practices manage intake, conflicts, deadlines, documents, billing, communication, and sensitive client information. Automation may support repetitive administrative steps, but it must not make legal judgments, create an attorney-client relationship, or bypass professional review.
Intake and routing
A supported intake workflow may collect approved non-sensitive facts, acknowledge receipt, create an internal record, and route the matter for review. It should not promise representation, evaluate legal merit, provide legal advice, or expose confidential details to an unapproved system.
Conflict and eligibility checkpoints
Conflict procedures, jurisdiction, matter type, deadlines, capacity, and other eligibility rules are firm-controlled decisions. Automation can prepare information and queues, but a qualified person owns the decision and the communication that follows.
Document and deadline workflows
Automation may check whether expected documents arrived, issue approved reminders, prepare a review package, or surface upcoming dates from an authoritative source. It must distinguish a reminder from a legal deadline calculation and provide an auditable path back to the source record.
Confidentiality and access
Before implementation, identify what information is privileged, confidential, regulated, or contractually restricted; which vendors can process it; who may access it; what is logged; how long it is retained; and how access is removed. Public chat and contact tools are not appropriate for confidential matter details.
Human review and auditability
Client-facing drafts, filings, legal conclusions, material case updates, trust-account activity, destructive actions, and other high-risk steps remain subject to the firm’s required review. Logs should show what the automation received, what it produced, which rule ran, and who approved the next action.
